What’s the difference between Liberalism and Libertarianism?

Liberalism is a general belief in various civil liberties, such as freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. Libertarians also believe in freedoms but with an added emphasis that government power and intervention is the greatest threat to freedom. Libertarians emphasize freedoms that limit government power such as the right to protest and the open right to criticize authority.

Canada’s ruling party does not espouse liberalism, and so the only party in Canada thathas espouses either liberalism or libertarianism is the Libertarian Party of Canada. The Liberal Party of Canada has made such alliances and instituted such laws and programs that work to limit freedom of speech and expression, and attempt to create a culture of silence and acquiescence, both of which are antithetical to liberalism.
